Supporting Lo Kunphen

The major challenge for Lo Kunphen is maintaining sufficient funding. The British charity, KINOE (Kids in Need of Education), provided the original funding for building and running the school up to 2007, supplemented by other smaller donations. With other commitments to consider, KINOE can no longer continue funding at this level, especially as inflation has increased costs, so it essential for Lo Kunphen to seek alternative sources. At current rates, external donations totalling around £12,000 per year are the absolute minimum required to keep the school running, covering teacher salaries, text books, the costs of the winter school and administration/ management/ maintenance costs. The total running costs of the school are even more than this, but local contributions from parents and the community and occasional one-off donations for specific items or events help to bridge the gap. For interested donors, a full breakdown of the budget is available.

Anyone wishing to help by sponsoring a student (estimated cost £250 or $500 per year) or giving a one-off donation, either as a general gift or for a specific purpose, is encouraged to contact KINOE or the advisers in Kathmandu (see Contacts). Donations made through KINOE in the UK, and Drokpa in the US, are entitled to the usual charitable tax concessions.
We believe amchi medicine emphasises disorders as they
manifest in the relationship between body, mind and soul, especially on the mind aspect of disorders. For Sowa Rigpa practitioners and followers of Buddhism, ignorance is the root cause of all diseases.
Lo Kunphen aims to provide a culturally appropriate free education and professional opportunities to children from poor families in mountain communities, and in particular to maintain and develop the tradition of amchi (Tibetan) medicine. Donations are welcome.
